A Dimpah OER

The Introduction to Knowledge Organisation Systems for Digital Humanities OER presents how cultural heritage resources are best indexed so that they are easily discovered by the user. The course uses different kinds of cultural heritage as examples, including historical newspapers, the performing arts and AR-enhanced cultural heritage objects. It presents several use cases, discussing the pros and cons of 1) professional (intellectual) approaches, 2) automatic methods, and 3) collaborative indexing (social tagging).

The Introduction to Knowledge Organisation Systems for Digital Humanities is an OER (Open Educational Resource) developed as part of the Digital Methods Platform for Arts and Humanities (Dimpah) project. Co-funded by the Erasmus+ Programme of the European Union, 2021–2023, the project aimed to aggregate, connect, and make widely available OERs on selected digital methods, to apply these methods to interdisciplinary contexts and to foster novel creative learning experiences by utilising data on the past for future stories.

A complementary journal article on the development of this OER can be found at:
Golub, Koraljka and Pestana, Olivia. ‘Subject-based Knowledge Organisation: An OER for Supporting (digital) Humanities Research’. 1 Jan. 2023 : 203 – 216. Openly available

There are seven OERs in the Dimpah project. They can each be studied individually or as a whole. In the latter case we propose the following sequence:

  1. Data Analysis with Python
  2. Text Analysis: Linguistic Meets Data Science
  3. Digital Research on European Historical Newspapers with the NewsEye Platform
  4. Netnography
  5. E-Spect@tor
  6. Design, Development and Deployment of Augmented Reality Applications (AR)
  7. Introduction to Knowledge Organisation Systems for Digital Humanities
