A Dimpah OER

The Digital Historical Research on European Historical Newspapers with the NewsEye Platform is an OER (Open Educational Resource) developed as part of the Digital Methods Platform for Arts and Humanities (DiMPAH) project. The project was co-funded by the Erasmus+ Programme of the European Union, 2021-2023, and aimed to aggregate, connect and make widely available novel OERs on selected digital methods, apply these to interdisciplinary contexts and foster novel creative learning experiences by taking data from the past into future stories.

There are seven OERs in the Dimpah project. They can each be studied individually or as a whole. In the latter case, we propose to follow this sequence:

  1. Introduction to Python for Digital Humanities
  2. Text Analysis: Linguistic Meets Data Science
  3. Digital Historical Research on European Historical Newspapers with the NewsEye Platform
  4. Netnography
  5. E-Spect@tor
  6. Design, Development and Deployment of Augmented Reality Applications (AR)
  7. Introduction to Knowledge Organisation Systems for Digital Humanities

This course provides an introduction to digitized historical newspaper analysis. Newspapers collect information about cultural, political and social events in a more detailed way than any other public record. They are a valuable source of information, but their analysis can be tricky, depending on the research question or the corpus's quality. The course presents methods from natural language processing for discovering, exploiting and visualizing newspapers. It discusses these methods in detail to highlight their advantages and limitations. Examples of the use of the NewsEye platform and examples of code in Python language are proposed to allow you to put into practice these exploitation techniques.
