3.1. Development of AR

3.1.2. Introductory scene

The introductory scene was designed to introduce users to the village of Choirokoitia, its rich history, residents, artefacts, and way of life. A female avatar was initially added to the scene, enriched with animation features, such as human-like expressions, clothing, and other relevant features, to emulate a young Choirokoitia resident of that era. A speech recording from an audio file was imported into Unity, which provided critical information on the Neolithic settlement of Choirokoitia and its importance.

However, first, a world atlas featuring different Neolithic sites and a map of Cyprus were imported into the scene. An arrow was added, guiding users to locate Cyprus on the map. Raycasting methods were used to detect if the mobile device was near the different Neolithic sites and to facilitate user interactivity. Then four other options for locating Choirokoitia on the map were offered to users—the added points of interest guided users in this process. A red colour signalled the wrong location selection on the map, while a green light signalled the correct location of the Choirokoitia village. Upon locating Choirokoitia, users were teleported to the village, where they experienced it in a 3D format. A 3D image of Choirokoita village was imported, featuring multiple assets, artefacts, music, and other relevant constructs.

Three hundred sixty images of Choirokoitia were also imported into the scene, providing a real-life touch on the site and its actual physical appearance today. The images and virtual scenes of the Neolithic village were added to turn the scenario into an interesting and immersive one. The 360 images provided a real-life touch on the actual site and its actual physical appearance today. In contrast, the 3D image of Choirokoitia village featured multiple assets, artefacts, music, and other relevant constructs. Finally, an animation clip, which featured a 3D image of a circular home, was added and adjusted manually to achieve a 360-y-axis animation.
